Sky Power’s SRE180 test stand provides a test solution for the SP-180. Due to the compact design the whole test stand is well suited for portable use. Test stands help to save costs by reducing expensive flight tests and identifying potential on the ground. This lowers development and operating costs and contributes to improving the overall cost-effectiveness of a UAV project. Another major advantage of engine test stands is the ability to carry out reproducible tests. Engineers can carry out the same tests several times to ensure the consistency and reliability of the results.

The rotating piston eliminates the reciprocating piston mechanism in the Wankel engine, which makes the engine smaller and lighter – ideal for UAVs. At the same time, the Wankel engine delivers a lot of power with less weight and volume compared to conventional engines. The smooth rotation ensures quiet running and reduces mechanical stress. As a result, Wankel engines require less maintenance and are more reliable. They can use different fuels efficiently, giving UAV operators more options. Sky Power’s test stand allows UAV developers to test Wankel technology and gain initial experience. It is available for purchase as well as for rent.

Apart from the electrical system which might be different in custom applications the SRE180 test stand contains all the main parts of the SP-180 engine system. To run the test stand a 48 V DC power supply is needed. In addition to the engine and its attachments, the test stand includes a fuel tank, a propeller including protection cage, the exhaust system, a starter generator, the engine control unit (ECU) and the associated software. All parts are mounted and covered on a chassis equipped with wheels.
The test stand is based on the SP-180 SRE hybrid, which is the flagship of the Sky Power propulsion portfolio. This wankel propulsion system has class leading performance figures that are achieved through a complex patented internal clean sheet design. Due to the nature of wankel, this propulsion system is exceptionally light and has a much smaller space envelope than the comparative two stroke equivalent. Minimal radial or torsional vibrations make this engine specifically compatible with high powered optics or sensors. The ability to mount this engine at 90 degrees (vertically) adds to the user flexibility – suited to helicopter applications. The engine has an integrated starter generator, which allows the wankel to have several different operating functions
The test stand can demonstrate the same modes as the SP-180 SRE hybrid too. Beside the combustion mode, the test stand can demonstrate a electrical mode. Therefore, the test stand is also equipped with an integrated generator to charge additional battery packs. Due to that the test stand can run in a hybrid-boost power mode too, combining the combustion engine and the generated electric energy.
